A Postpartum What??

A Postpartum What??

Ok, so what exactly is a postpartum doula and what do you do? This is a question I get often when I explain what I do for work. There are so many answers to this simple question and every postpartum doula is different in what they do. As a postpartum doula I can help with quite number of things! In this blog post I am going to share in depth a few of the services I offer.

Mother Care:

Whether this is your first, second or fourth child as a postpartum doula it is my job to support your postpartum healing period. As a mother you are working to support yourself as well as your new baby. There is a constant battle between self-care and caring for your new baby. I am here to tell you that you are not alone in this battle! I can help with making sure you feel supported as a new mother by keeping you hydrated, nourished and encouraged through your journey of parenthood.

Another aspect of my job is making sure your partner feels confident in his or her new role as a parent. This transition to parenthood can also be hard for the partner, and it is important that they feel comfortable in their new role.

Newborn Care:

Bringing home a baby can be very overwhelming! They are delicate and need a lot of attention. And quite honestly, they cry… a lot. I have experience working with newborns and have learned a few tips and tricks along the way that I enjoy sharing with new parents. As a postpartum doula I have been trained in newborn care and can help with many of the overwhelming duties that come with newborn care; such as first nail trim, first bath and even first solid food when the time comes. During your journey through newborn-hood you will be amazed at the parent you will become. One of my favorite aspects of this job is watching parents connect with their babies!

Sibling Care:

With the birth of a new baby there are a lot of changes in the household including changes with your older children. They are big brothers/sisters now! That is an exiting new title, but with this title comes new responsibility. I have experience working with children of many ages and can help your older children feel more comfortable with their new big sibling responsibilities. I have a few tips on helping older siblings to feel included with the new babies routines.

Meal Prep:

Cooking and cleaning should be the last thing on your mind when you come home with your new baby. As a postpartum doula I can do it all for you! I can prepare foods that are essential to postpartum healing as well as any sort of comfort food you are craving. I can stock your refrigerator with healthy snacks to support lactation health and snacks for your whole family. I can also help to arrange a meal train if you have friends or family in the area.

Household Chores:

I am able to help with light household chores such as keeping the living areas tidy, light vacuuming/sweeping, washing dishes and keeping up with the endless amounts of laundry that bringing home a new baby produces. I also have experience with washing and maintaining a cloth diapering set up if your family decides to use cloth diapers.

Finding Your Village:

Raising children takes a village and one of my main goals as a postpartum doula is to help you find yours. I have recommendations for local new moms groups, lactation consultants, pediatricians, chiropractors, massage therapists and much more. Whether or not you are new to the area or have lived here your whole life it can be very overwhelming to find the support you need, let me help you!

If any of this sounds interesting or beneficial to your family please feel free to contact me. I would love to work with your family!
